The Uncommitted Movement was founded on the principles of anti-genocide and anti-war advocacy, as a way to leverage our collective voting power to make a tangible impact on the political landscape. During this past presidential primary season, more than 700,000 Democrats across America chose to upend the status quo and not cast their votes for the incumbent administration, but instead for Uncommitted. This form of protest vote was meant to signal a demand for an immediate and lasting ceasefire in Gaza, and an arms embargo on Israel.
Over the last few months, a small group of individuals have made decisions on behalf of our nationwide movement. These individuals, without consulting our broader coalition and without being democratically chosen, changed the way that the movement operated from one that challenged the Democratic Party to one that completely catered to the party’s needs at the DNC. This was a betrayal of the true voice and core values of the countless uncommitted voters who believe that compromising on the values of peace and justice is non-negotiable. Throughout this process, important dissenting voices were silenced and the democratic, grassroots spirit of our movement was ignored.
Yet, our broad coalition of supporters stand united in our desire to maintain our commitment to resisting any political figure or candidate who supports or facilitates genocide. We continue to stand firm in our position and remain UNCOMMITTED to the Democratic nominee by withholding our votes from an administration that is complicit in genocide. Our movement represents a powerful electoral force, and we will not be ignored or coerced into supporting candidates who seek to continue the status quo.
Today we announce the formation of the Uncommitted Grassroots Movement that aims to reclaim the original mission. We categorically reject any political figure or party that aligns with or supports genocide. We invite all those disillusioned by the misrepresentation of the original leadership to join us in this renewed mission for peace and justice. Together, we can build a movement that truly reflects the will and the values of its voting base and that truly stands up for human rights.
